In the heart of the City of Logan, Aunty Betty McGrady stands as a beacon of wisdom, advocacy, and cultural preservation. As a respected Gunggari Elder and a descendant of the Traditional Custodians from Southwest Queensland, her life's work has been dedicated to uplifting the First Nations community of Logan and bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians through education and understanding.

Aunty Betty's journey is one of unwavering leadership and deep commitment to fostering positive change. Her tireless efforts span across numerous organizations, including the Logan District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, Nutcha Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation, and beyond, showcasing her multifaceted approach to community upliftment.

With a heart firmly rooted in her community, Aunty Betty represents and advocates for the needs of her people. She understands the challenges faced by Indigenous Australians – the sting of marginalization and the hunger for opportunity. Through her work, Aunty Betty endeavors to break down barriers and open doors for her community, always with a keen eye on creating equitable opportunities.

Aunty Betty's influence stretches into various realms, from legal support to cultural education. Her presence at functions and on executive boards (except the surfboard, as she humorously notes) is not merely a role but a mission to voice and address the concerns of her community at the highest levels.

Beyond her advocacy, Aunty Betty holds a special place for the youth, guiding them towards recognizing and seizing the opportunities that lie before them. Her work in the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre and her assistance to those entangled in the legal system reflect her belief in the potential of young people to rise above their circumstances.

Mentorship is another facet of Aunty Betty's contributions, with individuals like Talitha Love acknowledging the profound impact of her guidance and wisdom. This mentorship extends beyond professional advice, offering a sense of belonging and understanding that only a figure like Aunty Betty can provide.

Having called Logan her home for over four decades, Aunty Betty's roots in the community are deep and nurturing. Her legacy is not just in the work she does but in the lives she touches – from the political figures and business leaders she interacts with to the three generations of her family that share this home with her.
